Tower of Herceg Stjepan – Ljubuški

Ljubuski Tower SunsetThe picture represents the Tower of Ljubuški, built by Herzeg Stjepan, local Duke, during the pre Turk conquest defense preparations, but some would like to say that he built it for his mistress, allegedly German, hence the name Ljubuski (Liebeski).

I took the photo during this few incredible sunset minutes, which appears to be one of the luminous specialties of the city. The Tower is now nothing but a ruin and it is even dangerous to roam around, mainly destroyed by the earthquake back in 70’s, but also … with obvious lack of conservation interest or capability. What a Pity.

Kravica Falls Ljubuški

Jewel in the Wild

kravica fallsFirst time I saw Kravica Falls I really couldn’t believe my senses.

After a drive trough Herzegovina dry land which sometimes looks as hospitable as Dark Side of the Moon my ears caught a distant roar. Than my skin felt moist falling from the clear blue sky, but my eyes still saw nothing apart from the bushes and stones. Then, in between the pines I noticed a waterfall which was like from some other place. Everything was green and vital, and the amount of water was astonishing. Again, I couldn’t believe that there could be such a jewel in the middle of dry land.

As I got near I was all wet, as well as my camera, one just cannot take the close up shot, since the lenses are covered with water in a matter of seconds.

This picture was taken in February ‘05. and the amount of water was very low, but all other pictures I have are overwhelmed with water.

Kravica Falls Blues

Neglected Beauty

kravica fallsFalls are just few kilometers away, East of Ljubuški, on the right hand side of the road to Čapljina.

It is a very popular photo location, especially for the religious tourists who came from nearby Međugorje (Medjugorje). Unfortunately as many other things in Ljubuški, Kravica Falls are pretty neglected. There is no organized service there, just few local entrepreneurs organizing a fast food and beer service mainly on plastic chairs and from mobile camp houses. One of them even build a wooden bridge across the river. It is really a wonder how unscrupulous one can be when it comes to its benefit. What’s even worse, local government doesn’t pay any attention to this devastation, and it probably never will.

Kravica Falls Rhythm

Highway or our way

kravica fallsUnconfirmed information from federal government reveals that famous 5C highway (Hungary – Croatia – BiH – Croatia) route will pass some hundred meters from Kravica Falls.

Such a thing could never happen in normal country, but Bosnia-Herzegovina is far from that. Somewhere, in normal world this would be used as a good opportunity to preserve natural resorts and revitalize tourist content and services. Somewhere else somebody would engage and create a content for the drivers, least a rest area enabling the view over Kravica, but I am certain that highway activity will inevitably have significant influence on Kravica. I would put my money on negative effect, but, maybe this is the only way to get rid of plastic chairs and camp house HORECA entrepreneurship.

Bells

Learn to live with

kravica falls
I’ve run into web site named adacta which is nicely design site but tottaly devoted against crurch bell rings. Apparently webmaster lives near one of the churches and doesn’t have a better hobby.

I also live 70 meters from a church who has a habbit celebrating both hours and halfs.

Mainly I do not even register the bells ring, not even at midnight when it does it’s 12 hits. I’ve lerned to live with it, just like the most people do. If I was in webmaster shoes I would put this hobby adacta. Or start collecting Germany 2006. stickers. Or buy me a better window with isolation. But I am not, so I’ll just stop the topic. Ad acta!
